Be All I Can Be

“Rachell is trusting me more and more to wander the top floor of the house,” Chester recognizes when he realizes she is letting him sniff and smell around in her home office.

“She did not let me roam this room until I got better with my potty schedule,” he speculates as he crawls into a bed just for him to lay sleeping under her desk as she works.

“Well, this change lets me know I’m doing better,” an excited Chester concludes.

“I wonder what else Rachell will allow the better my routine becomes?” he asks himself.

“I’ll just improve every day and Rachell will open my life to many new places and things. What a wonderful opportunity to spread my wings and see more of this world,” Chester orates.

“I am making my mind up right now I will not make a mess in the house. I must figure out how to tell Rachell I need to go out. Let me think for a minute. Ok, let me see if hopping on her lap and staring into her eyes signals my desire to go out. I am not able to bark like other dogs, but I will someday,” Chester imagines.

Chester beams at his decision, “alright, the goal is set. I’m determined to BE ALL I CAN BE!”

Ragged to Healthy

Chester recalls his skin condition when he arrived at Rachell’s place. His two front legs were bare where he licked his fur so much to relieve the itching, he no longer had hair there. His back legs showed signs of malnutrition at the knees and all along his back and sides. Chester remembers how miserable and weak he felt the first couple of weeks in his new home. But he knew his life was on the right track, now at 8 years old. He carried hope that this love and care from his new companion would bring him back to health.

After 6 weeks

And he was right to begin to dream of a better life the first few days he stayed with Rachell.

“I am stronger after a week getting food twice a day to pack on some weight,” Chester thinks.

“And my skin itching is lessening with the medicinal lotion Rachell is rubbing all over my body. My skin is still irritated, but I’m not licking my paws and back as much as I did two weeks ago.,” Chester reviews.

“The healing was slower there. Rachell goes to great lengths (not just the lotion) to keep me from aggravating the progress, but that is a post for another day,” he giggles.

“Look how far I have come in six weeks. I have new hair growing on my back and sides even though the incoming hair is shallow. The hair on my legs is long and thick now except for the left front leg. And I can see thin, frail wisps of hair on that leg,” he finishes.

Chester exclaims with excitement, “My RAGGED TO HEALTHY story is going to blow your mind!”

Life is Good

Two days pass after Chester arrives at his new forever home when Rachell understands what is meant by the fact that Chester has no lower jaw and how it impacts his eating. She was feeding him hard dog food when she figures out he is swallowing the morsels whole and needs to switch to soft food. She stops by the vet clinic and gets him the best soft dog food she can find.

“What’s taking so long to prepare my food now?” Chester wonders as he watches Rachell while she mixes his food for his dinner meal. The shift from hard to soft food causes preparation time to increase significantly. First, she scoops soft food from a can. Second, she crushes a pink pill in a white porcelain mortar with a pestle and then mixes the dust into the food. She spoons a little bit of the mixture onto two of her fingers.

“Rachell extends her fingers right in front of my mouth for me to lick food off. This has never happened before,” Chester resolves.

“In my previous home I had to get as much food as possible scarfed up before the German shepherd or the big cat swarmed my food. My caretaker did not stop them either. I am being hand fed and getting all the food I want. What a blessing to be here where Rachell pays special attention to address my needs,” he finishes.

“I never dreamed this. LIFE IS GOOD,” Chester bellows!

Pooch Positive

Keeping a positive attitude speaks volumes to each day as I rise to greet the coming dawn. Focusing constantly on optimistic thoughts has been said to manifest the best ideas into existence in relationships and surroundings. I discovered early in my life that having pets was extremely effective in helping fulfill this setting.

I have enjoyed many dogs and an occasional cat throughout my years. I remember my first family pet as a wagging happy go lucky dog that romped from room to room when awakening the household each morning. Monty would run from my room to my brothers’ rooms to my parent’s room in a routine. If I was up already moving around, he would jump up on me. If I was still in bed, he would hop on my bed and lick my face to awaken me wanting attention. This start made me smile every time and unknowingly created a very uplifting mood. What a blessing this dog introduced to my life that continued throughout all my years to follow.

I owned dogs over the years and can’t really remember a time I did not have one. Some wandered into my life; some were discovered amongst a pile of stray pups in the woods across the street from where I lived. I found homes for four of the strays and kept the runt of the litter. Maxine became a close buddy that I was allowed to take to work with me every day. This close companionship enlightened me about the support a pet can bring to your life.

Pets share their cheerfulness and love with you. They contribute to a very positive environment that will keep you motivated and inspire you to LIVE EACH DAY TO THE FULLEST!

Finding My Spot

Chester bounds up his pet steps at the end of Rachell’s bed and stops briefly to check out the terrain. He walks cautiously toward a sleeping Rachell. He spies her arm extended out perpendicular to her body and sees where he wants to go. Quietly he tiptoes to the crook in her forearm. Chester gets as close to her as possible and then lies down snuggling between her arm and chest. Rachell stirs briefly realizing Chester is cradled in her armpit. She is certainly surprised to feel her best buddy so tight in a risky position.

Rachell opens her eyes to check out Chester’s move to be so close. She weighs the scenarios and outcomes of this situation she is presented with.

“If I am careful not to wiggle my arm while he sleeps here, this is a wonderful feeling. Having him right next to me soothes him or he wouldn’t be here. And he calms me too. This makes me feel so loved and happy,” Rachell notices.

Chester feels Rachell adjusting ever so gently to be comfortable thinking “She’s good with me being here right next to her while we sleep together. I’m thrilled I took the chance FINDING MY SPOT!”

Spring is Here

“Yellow dust on my nose, yellow dust in my eyes and yellow dust in between my toes,” Chester notices in early spring.

“What is this stuff?” Chester wonders since this the first spring he has been outside more than any time in his life.

“Let me wipe the pollen from the daffodils and narcissus from your little eyes,” Rachell shares out loud as she moves to wipe Chester’s eyes with a Kleenex.

“Oh, so this is pollen,” he declares. Rachell removes the yellow dust accumulated on his nose and the tops of his paws too.

“There are so many things I’m learning about with all the new things I am experiencing,” Chester declares.

“I look forward to finding out what is in store for me as the seasons change, even though some may take a little more maintenance to keep me clean and healthy,” he notes.

In that moment, a tiny, winged creature stops for an instant in front of his nose before quickly flying off on the wind.

“What is that?” Chester questions as he uncrosses his eyes as the buzzing winged bird moves on.

Rachell exclaims, “to see a hummingbird up close and personal is the chance of lifetime, Chester. What a blessing. SPRING IS HERE!”

Special Needs

“I’m the cutest miniature yorkie I know, but I sure do have a hard time keeping my mouth clean,” Chester says to himself.

Rachell takes notice following his first couple of meals there are leftovers hanging on to his lips. On inspection she discovers Chester doesn’t have a lower jaw as she wipes his mouth with a damp cloth after he eats. This becomes routine for her to clean him up around his mouth.

Chester realizes this maintenance keeps the food from hardening over time which is what he was used to in his past. He recalls how uncomfortable this felt.

“I hope she knows how grateful I am,” Chester thinks. He thanks his new companion by giving her a nose print on her cheek.

She quietly tells him, “You are so unique, Chester. We’ll get all your needs figured out little dude. Don’t worry about this. Just bear with me as I learn how to take care of your SPECIAL NEEDS!”

Rachell’s Care Package

Chester reflects on the fact, “Rachell carries me everywhere she goes since I came to live with her. I don’t remember when I’ve had this kind of treatment!”

“There are many steps in the house, and I don’t have full strength in my muscles yet, but I’m going to keep moving and get stronger and stronger. I know this is how I can help Rachell,” he peruses.

“Every attention, whether I’m feeding on generous food portions or she’s taking me outside to do my business, she carries me to my destination.

“There is a pretty big threshold drop out that way to my little play area,” he peruses. “And I see Rachell has added a little concrete tile that is normally a stepping stone for a garden. I bet that is for when I get to go out on my own. How thoughtful she is when it comes to me,” Chester delights as he looks forward to his future here.

“Maybe Rachell wants to make sure I don’t slip down the stairs or trip jumping out the back door?” Chester questions.

While Chester ponders these thoughts, Rachell speaks to him on one of his short trips, “I’ll let you take these paths once you are stronger, Chester. I just want you to be strong enough to take the whole flight of steps and not hurt yourself.”

“It’s amazing how Rachell knows what I’ve got on my mind,” Chester thinks. ‘I’ll trust and enjoy the handling as she continues to pick me up and carry me where she goes. She’s the BEST,” he rejoices.

Chester exclaims, “I certainly love the care she gives me. I’m her CARE PACKAGE!”

Hello World

Chester’s thoughts reflect on the last time he took a ride in a car to the memory of travel to this wonderful place. Most experiences before had not been pleasurable so he feels apprehensive and enthused at the same time. Chester keeps his chin up and keeps his little toes crossed that this ride is enjoyable and exciting.

Rachell doesn’t make him ride in the crate that reminds him of his move to his new home. She places him on a bed pillow covered with a blanket that lifts him high enough to see out the window. in the front seat. Chester places his front feet on the door’s ledge to secure himself safely.

“This is so thrilling,” Chester thinks.

“I wonder where we are headed?” he speculates.

Rachell backs slowly down the driveway and then shifts into drive to head down the road. “We’re going on a short journey around the neighborhood, Chester” Rachell informs him as if she is reading his mind.

Chester relaxes and peers out the glass to gander at the world passing by.

“I just want you to get used to traveling around with me wherever I go, little man,” she says.

“I plan to take you with me to as many places as I can,” Rachell continues.

“I am ecstatic to know what lies in the future,” Chester imagines.

“What a magnificent life I have ahead,” he realizes.

With all he can muster and his little tail wagging as fast as he might so Rachell sees how happy he is, Chester exclaims “HELLO WORLD!”

Dreams Come True

Chester devours his meal as fast as he can. Old habits kick in and he wants to be sure he gets all that is put out for him. He sees there is only one cat to defend against in his new home. He figures if he gulps down what is set out for him that he will get some energy to explore his surroundings.

What he finds is that Rachell, his new human companion, is watching closely to make sure he gets all the morsels. She sits right next to him on the floor to deter the cat from getting anywhere nearby. Chester inhales the hard tiny chunks.

He only has five teeth and a left upper fang; therefore chewing is not an option.

“This is okay with me. I’m getting as much as I can eat,” he decides.

“This dinner is the best I have ever had since I don’t have to fight for my food,” Chester thinks.

“I hope this is the way things will be going forward,” he envisions.

“If this is how I’m going to be treated here, I’m going to love this place” he finishes!

Rachell picks Chester up after the last bite. She pats his belly as she says, “Well, I can see you’re full,” as she giggles.

Chester is ecstatic thinking “Who knew? What a life. DREAMS DO COME TRUE!”
