Heart and Might

Chester looks around the room in his new home taking survey of the changes that happened in his world recently. He counts his freshly made little bed with tiny throw blanket first. As he continues to peer around, he takes in the water and food mat spread out with itty bitty pellets all for him to enjoy.

“Wow, all for me?” he believes. In the last place he lived he had to protect his turf while he tried to gulp down his food. This is so different; Chester doesn’t know what to think. He embraces the happy feeling overtaking him this bright morning.

“I raised up a level with this move,” he trusts.

As if Rachell is reading his mind she greets him cheerfully, “Good morning, Chester! We have a fun filled day ahead and I hope you enjoy what is on the agenda! Let’s get moving with a walk in the sunshine. Embrace this gift from God today!”

Chester intends, “I’m going to make the most of it. I will love my new human, Rachell, with all my heart and might!”

Morning Break

Rachell waits for Chester to arrive each morning to start their day together. Sometimes she is wide awake so she lays quietly with her eyes closed. Other times she is asleep, and the weight of his tiny body is enough to stir her. Either way, the excitement of Chester’s day is his first climb up Rachell’s leg to her hip for a pause and then on up her torso.

“Good morning,” he clamors and sits right in the middle of Rachell’s chest prepared for his joyful pounce. Chester patiently waits as Rachell opens her eyes and sees him towering above her face. She smiles ear-to-ear. This lets Chester know he is free to move around at will. Today he leans in toward her and licks her nose. He is thrilled to give her a kiss today. And what pleasure Rachell receives with his daily greeting.

Chester wiggles and squirms on top of his Rachell as he delights at Today’s MORNING BREAK!

Northern Beams

“Off we go again,” Chester notes, “only this time is nighttime.”

“I’ll follow my girl anywhere no matter what the time is,” Chester confirms.

Rachell places him in her lap as they slowly tip down the neighborhood road. After a short few minutes of cruising, they stop in a parking lot up a two lane highway. Rachell shuts of the engine and turns off the head lights. She opens the sunroof and stands in her seat. Chester is curious what she’s up to as he looks up through the opening. Rachell spans the sky seemingly looking for something particular. Chester follows her gaze and sees a display of dynamic patterns of brilliant lights that appear as curtains he has never seen before. He determines this perch makes these dynamic flickers appear before him.

“Wow, what in the world are those?” he questions.

Rachell reaches down and picks her little man up from the passenger seat. She raises him to the edge of the sunroof to help him see the display of lights across the heavens. Chester looks at her inquisitively.

As if to read his mind, she tells him, “These are a natural spectacle we call the Northern Lights, also called the Aurora Borealis. Do you see them?” she asks.

“Yes, yes,” Chester embellishes with a wiggling head and a fast-wagging tail!

Rachell holds him tightly as she continues to watch the scenery. He loves his Rachell intensely sharing this fabulous wonderment of nature as his best buddy keeps him safely tucked in her arms.

In the peace-filled minutes here with his best buddy, Chester feels enlightened by these rays he now calls the Northern Beams.

Happy Memorial Day

Chester snuggles in next to Rachell in his comfy place at her arm curved under her pillow.

“She’s sleeping in this morning which is unusual,” Chester notes. He tilts his head toward his bestie with one eye slightly open. He looks lovingly at her snoozing quietly relishing this cuddly time with her. After a short time, he feels Rachell stir from slumber. He is ready and waits for her to say good morning to him like she always starts his day.

“Good morning my sweet Chessie Chess,” Rachell greets him.

“Do you know what day this is?” she asks him.

Chester pops up and faces Rachell as he pauses for her to explain.

“This is Memorial Day, Chester,” Rachell states.

“Today is a celebration in remembrance of American veterans. Men in service to the United States of America for freedom.” she continues.

Chester listens intently to her description of this special day. Rachell’s explanation shares Chester’s elation that describes his situation now that he lives with her. He knows he lives free now with Rachell. He wags his tail feverishly to let her know he is very happy in his new home. Chester jumps into Rachell’s arms to start this wonderful day celebrating freedom. He knows what this means as he reflects on his memory of the day he was freed to share great joy in this home with Rachell.

Chester murmurs to Rachell excitedly, “HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!”

The WILD BLUE YONDER

Chester blinks his eyes open as Rachell says, “Hey, Chessie” while she nudges him awake early one morning.  Rachell’s swift scoop places him in her folded arms securely. She turns and heads out her bedroom door.

“This is out of the ordinary,” Chester reflects, wondering what Rachell might be up to today. She carries him to her car and sets him in his car seat positioned in the front passenger seat. Much training was involved, but Chester finally learned to be still and not step up on the edges or try to jump out of the padded carrier. Chester watches while she puts on her seat belt and starts the car. Rachell backs out of the garage so she can take off down the driveway. Chester’s mind races as they pull into the street heading out of the neighborhood. The temp is brisk, and the sun is shining bright.

Chester throws caution to the wind stopping on one thought, “I don’t care where we are going, I’m just thrilled we go on these adventures together. Off we go into the WILD BLUE YONDER!”

We Be Dancing

We be dancin’, dancin’, dannnciiinnnn… like a record machine. Chester is contemplating if dancing is what Rachell is doing as she swings side to side in a rocking motion after she lifts him to her chest and cuddles him close.

“This is dancing,” Chester figures as he listens to the lyrics and rocks to the beat of the music.

At that moment Rachell declares, “Let’s dance like this every day, Chester. I love doing this with you!”

“Every day?” Chester hears.

Chester likes this idea Rachell suggests. He wags his little tail in agreement to let her know he’s up for the action. And this is how this fun activity adds to Chester’s day.

He decides, “I’m really starting to love my daily routine.”

Chester thrills with excitement as he concludes “I’m looking forward to so much fun with my Rachell as WE BE DANCING every day!”

Pet Meds

“What takes so long for Rachell to prepare my food?” Chester inquires.

He watches as she places 10-12 morsels of food in a little white ceramic bowl. Then she takes one pink pill from a blue prescription bottle and breaks the dose in half. Next Chester watches as Rachell crushes the mixture in the mortar and pestle until a fine powder is achieved. She combines the powder with a spoonful of soft dog food to obscure the taste in Chester’s food.

“I am so appreciative of the level of preparation Rachell takes to get my food ready for me. There is not one complaint from me now that I know what work is being done for me,” Chester decides.

“I wonder why she has to do all this?” Chester questions.

As if Rachell is reading his mind she states, “This medicine is for your health, Chessie. I know this takes some time to get ready for you to eat, but this is necessary to support your pancreatitis.”

Chester has no idea what ails him but is thankful for Rachell making time to fix the problem.

“And the baby silver spoon Rachell is using speaks to how special I am to her,” he believes. “Rachell is caring for me like a mom cares for her child. Thank goodness for pet meds!”

Home Additions

“I wonder why this dog is here?” Chester questions as he watches a strange mutt wander his yard beside the driveway. He stands still and tall as he sees a tiny dog sniffing around the flower gardens.

After several minutes, Chester decides to move cautiously toward the visitor and companion strolling the grass. He walks along the pavement with his nose to the ground for smells he may discover to help him learn about these sightseers. Little did Chester know these guests were his new roommates.

Rachell steps closer to Chester as he inches toward the pooch. She is unsure what to expect from either animal, so she reaches down and scoops Chester up in her arms so he can observe from a safe place. Rachell feels his heart racing as he looks on without averting his eyes. Rachell is providing a roof over their heads with understanding they have no where else to go. She prays these additions to the household will not be any problem for Chester.

Rachell hugs Chester and holds him close to her heart assuring him that everything will be fine.

“I’ve got you little man. I won’t let anything hurt you,” she tells him.

Rachell feels Chester relax in her arms and calms herself. He wriggles tight to her chest.

Chester trusts her words thinking, “As long as I have Rachell to protect me, I’ll be OKAY!”

Breakthrough

“How do I make my Rachell happy” Chester wonders as he wakes up?

“This extreme tiredness troubles me. I just want to laze around all day. I need to build my energy level. I’ll eat as much as Rachell feeds me and put on some weight. That should help. I’ll feel better and be able to move around more. That’s what I’ll do,” he decides.

“I wonder if I can tell Rachell to feed me more. I know what I can do. I’ll paw my food dish to let her know I want more.” This thought is revolutionary for Chester.

So that morning, Chester scooches his food bowl across the carpet after he finishes what Rachell put out for his breakfast. She is astonished to see him asking for more food.

“Do you want more food today?” Rachell asks.

“That’s a good boy, Chester. You’re a smart boy for letting me know what you want,” Rachell continues.

At this point Chester figures out there are actions he can take to indicate to Rachell what he wants or needs. He can show Rachell he wants to do more and be more for her.

“I’ll be an inspiration for Rachell to understand that I want to be more dog for a better life ahead for Rachell and me,” he finishes.

Chester realizes excitedly “My take charge attitude is key to my success. What an AWESOME BREAKTHROUGH!”

Brave New World

Chester catches Rachell putting on her tennis shoes one day as the sun approaches noon. Rachell picks him up, heads down the stairs and out the garage door. She sets Chester in his car seat and off they go. Chester is excited as they travel down the road with his new best friend. He wonders what she has planned for today.

Chester perches on his pet car seat to look out the passenger window to see if he can figure out their destination. After a short ride, Rachell pulls up in a parking lane right beside a children’s playground with a short walking loop. “I wonder what this is. I have never been to a place like this before,” Chester notes.

Rachell puts Chester’s harness on and attaches his leash.

“Oh boy, we are going for a walk,’ Chester exclaims as he wiggles his tail back and forth to show her how excited he is. They begin a stroll around the park. Chester sniffs and smells every spot in the grass he can reach.

“What a fabulous time to explore as lead of this adventure. I think I might like this all the time,” Chester decides. “It’s a BRAVE NEW WORLD!”
